What to do When You’ve Tried Every Behavior Strategy [Episode 112]

Why Your Behavior Strategy Isn’t Working (and What to Try Instead)

When a behavior strategy stops working, we often assume the student has changed. But in many cases, the plan itself needs a reset. Even strong strategies can fail if they are misaligned with a student’s needs.

The most common cause is using the wrong function of behavior. If we reinforce the wrong thing, we may accidentally strengthen the behavior we are trying to reduce. Another reason is inconsistent implementation. When the strategy looks different from one adult to the next, students receive mixed messages about expectations.

There are also red flags that tell us a strategy needs attention. Over-prompting, confusing directions, or expectations that don’t match a student’s skills are just a few signs. When things feel complicated, it is usually time to simplify.

A reset does not require starting over. Instead, focus on four steps: clear the noise, simplify expectations, rebuild trust, and return to core supports. Consistency matters more than perfection.

When teams feel exhausted or discouraged, regrouping as a staff can make all the difference. Align expectations, rebuild routines, and support each other. A behavior strategy succeeds when everyone works together and makes steady progress—not when everything goes perfectly.

Episode Highlights:

  1. Strategies don’t fail—alignment fails.
  2. Behaviors spike when kids feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or dysregulated.
  3. You can’t implement a big strategy on top of a shaky foundation.
  4. A reset is not a setback—it’s a recalibration.
  5. Momentum returns when you focus on small, doable wins.
  6. Teachers need just as much regulation and support as their students.
